What is CanSkate Hockey?

CanSkate is learn to skate program which all others are measured against. CanSkate is a nationally tested and proven curriculum that supports skaters success in developing stronger basic skills on the ice.

CanSkate Hockey is geared towards hockey and ringette players who are looking to improve their balance, agility, power and endurance. Skills from the CanSkate program are tailored to hockey gameplay.

Why CanSkate Hockey at CLSC?

The CanSkate program at the Char-Lan Skating Club has been awarded the Achieved Standard distinction in the CanSkate Excellence program.

CLSC is the only CanSkate program in our area that achieved the minimum expectations, meaning that our group sizes are small (less than 1:10 ratio), our coaches lead lessons that are high quality and our program is run to strict standards.

Skaters who complete the six stages of CanSkate will be well prepared for games and practices with their hockey or ringette team. Skaters who complete all stages of CanSkate have superior skating skills, which allows them to focus their efforts in practice on strategic game play as opposed to learning skating skills and hockey drills at the same time. CanSkate graduates learn to skate with efficiency and power both forward and backward.

What will my skater learn?

All CanSkate lessons are built around the ABC's of skating- Agility, Balance and Control. Skaters will be led through three  circuits filled with skills that will progress in difficulty as the skater masters each move. Sessions begin with an upbeat and fast paced warmup, then skaters complete three unique circuits. These circuits are led by a professional certified coach and dedicated program assistants. After the lesson time has finished, skaters are encouraged to challenge their skills by participating in a group activity around the full ice surface. The session ends with a cool-down, a time to lower the heart rate and stretch the muscles used during the session.

Skaters will earn badges and ribbons across six stages of CanSkate.

Who will coach CanSkate?

All of our CanSkate sessions are coached by highly trained, nationally certified professional coaches. All of our coaches have valid first aid training and are in good standing with Skate Canada. The coaches are assisted by trained program assistants, who help develop skills and demonstrate and assist skaters.

You are in good hands with the CanSkate team at CLSC!

What will my child need?

All skaters will need a CSA approved hockey helmet. Ski, bicycle and multi use helmets are not acceptable. Skaters should dress in warm layers, with mittens, splash/snow pants and a jacket or sweater. Good quality hockey skates will make a world of difference. Full hockey equipment is allowed, no sticks or pucks please.
